V. V. S. Laxman Class player

Laxman has class writ all over his batting and reminds me of Azhar in many aspects. Wish he scores many more centuries, says Raju. It is not easy to play 100 Tests when you get indifferent treatment consistently, he remarked.

N. Shivlal Yadav, BCCI vice-president, says it was a fitting tribute to Laxman’s class that he played 100 Tests. There was never a doubt about his ability to come up with big classy centuries. He is a great player to watch when in full flow. He has done Hyderabad proud, he said.

Noel David, who was Laxman’s roommate in Ranji and the few one-dayers he played for India, recalls that the former was a very disciplined and very religious cricketer. There was never an instance of him losing temper. A wonderful guy who deserved more than anyone else to play 100 Tests, he remarked.

Ganguly offside king

Known for his timing and glorious stroke-play on the off-side, he conjured several crucial innings, home and away. His handy seam bowling has broken partnerships in both forms of the games; he has 100 scalps in ODIs.

Ganguly’s most significant contribution came as a tough talking and strong minded skipper who could inspire.

He is India’s most successful Test captain with 21 wins in 49 matches, apart from leading India to the World Cup final in 2003. He looked adversity in the eye and refused to be intimidated. It sent a strong message to his men.

“There is always pressure from the others during your career.

Five years back it was Dinesh Mongia and Hemang Badani, now it is Rohit Sharma. This is nothing new,” said Ganguly.

He noted it was not a question of a single good innings but sustained performances over the years that spoke about a cricketer.

Great wall of india

All cricketers will have a golden period in their career. The best period for Rahul Dravid started in a match against Australia at Kolkata in 2001, when India was forced to follow on with more than 400 runs in arrears. Glenn McGrath was breathing fire at that moment and the team had already lost the first four wickets and was staring at defeat. Then suddenly and from a defensive approach, both Rahul Dravid and V.V.S.Laxman shifted gears and started counter-attacking the Aussie bowlers. V.V.S.Laxman went on to score an epoch-making 281 and Rahul Dravid scored 162 runs.

Finally India not only took lead but also won the match due to the mesmerizing off-spin bowling of Harbhajan Singh. There was no looking back for him. He became more and more aggressive as he shed his defensive approach and scored runs quickly. Later on, when India toured Australia, in the first test at Adelaide he scored a double century in the first innings and followed it up with a match winning 73 in the second innings. And when India toured Pakistan in 2004, he was their main stay of the batting. In the second test when he was given the opportunity to lead the side with India leading the series, he ensured that the Indian team delivered the final blow to Pakistan with his shrewd captaincy.

Finally with Sourav Ganguly losing the favour of the selectors, he was made the skipper in 2005. Though he started off well in this position and netted comparisons with Aussie skipper Steve Waugh, he could not live up to the expectations. Key members like Virender Sehwag and V.V.S.Laxman and injuries to Sachin Tendulkar factored in to the disappointment.

If cricker religion Sachin is only God

The greatest batsman in the world today, Sachin Tendulkar has the cricketing world at his feet. The adulation he commands world over is unsurpassed, perhaps since the days of Don Bradman, to whom of course he has been compared, by no less than the great man himself. While he may not end with a Test career average of 99.94, there is little doubt that based on his vigorous style of batsman ship and his insatiable appetite for runs and big scores, he is the most complete batsman since Vivian Richards. In many ways though he has surpassed even that outstanding West Indian batsman.

While his batting ranks him among the best in the world, he is also a part-time bowler and has played a crucial role as a leg spinner or a medium pace bowler who tends to break partnerships. He has more than a hundred wickets in ODIs and 35 in tests, though his bowling averages are above 40. He continues to perform well under the massive weight of expectation of hundreds of millions of cricket followers, in India and around the world, and most recently was named Player Of The Tournament in the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Incidentally, Sachin is the first batsman to be declared run out by third umpire in 1992 in South Africa.
